Good Places to Start Reading
in the Urantia Book

The Urantia Book encompasses the history of our planet from a vantage point that only someone who was there could describe. The book authoritatively documents the evolution of our planet in both geology and human drama. For example, it details the tragedy described as the Lucifer Rebellion, making real, for the first time, the events and the consequences of this mysterious and frightening episode in our planet's history. It documents the appearance of Adam and Eve, shedding light on the cryptic story told in the Bible. It follows the entire life of Jesus, raising him out of the iconoclastic suffocation the Christian Church has imposed on this unique God-man.

If you are interested in history, if you are curious about what happened before humans really began documenting events, the history in The Urantia Book would be reason enough to read it. The more we understand about the family of mortals, the easier it is to love one another. And as we all know, we could use more love.

By now you may be wondering how a book could document human events that aren't documented elsewhere. In order to understand The Urantia Book's origins, one must be willing to accept things that don't neatly fall into pre-determined categories. We have to abandon our arrogance and admit that much of what is real, what has happened before us and what exists in the universe beyond our small lives, could just possibly be beyond our meager knowledge.

The Urantia Book is rich in paradox. It presents material facts that are stunning in their scope, yet no material fact can validate the truth of what these Papers claim. The authors place spiritual reality as the highest authority, yet denounce the tyranny of institutionalized religion. The Urantia Papers take you to that wondrous place where belief is validated by inner conviction.

Have you ever wanted to know what angels really do? In the Urantia Book, you can read, in detail, the scope of their activities. Ever wondered where you go when you die? Read what takes place from the moment you wake up, through eternity. Can science and spirituality ever be integrated? Yes. In breathtaking harmony.

How did something like this, which is clearly "not of this world" come to be on the Biker Planet in book form? The Urantia Papers appeared to a student of Freud, a doctor well-known for exposing fraudulent and self-deluded so-called psychic phenomenon near the first part of the twentieth century. In 1929, the physician, Dr. William S. Sadler of Chicago, Illinois, wrote in the appendix to his book, The Mind at Mischief, as he struggled to understand the phenomena before him:

"I have promised not to publish this case during the lifetime of the individual. I hope sometime to secure a modification of that promise and to be able to report this case more fully because of its interesting features. I was brought in contact with it, in the summer of 1911, and I have had it under my observation more or less ever since, having been present at probably 250 of the night sessions, many of which have been attended by a stenographer who made voluminous notes.

"A thorough study of this case has convinced me that it is not one of ordinary trance. While the sleep seems to be quite of a natural order, it is very profound, and so far we have never been able to awaken the subject when in this state; but the body is never rigid, and the heart action is never modified, tho respiration is sometimes markedly interfered with. This man is utterly unconscious, wholly oblivious to what takes place, and, unless told about it subsequently, never knows that he has been used as a sort of clearing house for the coming and going of alleged extra-planetary personalities. In fact, he is more or less indifferent to the whole proceeding, and shows a surprising lack of interest in these affairs as they occur from time to time.

"In no way are these night visitations like the séances associated with spiritualism. At no time during the period of eighteen years' observation has there been a communication from any source that claimed to be the spirit of a deceased human being. The communications which have been written, or which we have had the opportunity to hear spoken, are made by a vast order of alleged beings who claim to come from other planets to visit this world, to stop here as student visitors for study and observation when they are en route from one universe to another or from one planet to another. These communications further arise in alleged spiritual beings who purport to have been assigned to this planet for duties of various sorts.

"Eighteen years of study and careful investigation have failed to reveal the psychic origin of these messages. I find myself at the present time just where I was when I started. Psychoanalysis, hypnotism, intensive comparison, fail to show that the written or spoken messages of this individual have origin in his own mind. Much of the material secured through this subject is quite contrary to his habits of thought, to the way in which he has been taught, and to his entire philosophy. In fact, of much that we have secured, we have failed to find anything of its nature in existence. Its philosophic content is quite new, and we are unable to find where very much of it has ever found human expression.

"Much as I would like to report details of this case, I am not in a position to do so at present. I can only say that I have found in these years of observation that all the information imparted through this source has proved to be consistent within itself. While there is considerable difference in the quality of the communications, this seems to be reasonably explained by a difference in state of development and order of the personalities making the communications. Its philosophy is consistent ... In fact, the case is so unusual and extraordinary that it establishes itself immediately, as far as my experience goes, in a class by itself, one which has thus far resisted all my efforts to prove it to be of auto-psychic origin. Our investigations are being continued and, as I have intimated, I hope some time in the near future to secure permission for the more complete reporting of the phenomena connected with this interesting case."

The difficulty Dr. Sadler encountered in understanding what he had before him is indicative of the difficulty that people have in describing the book to others. The most amazing discovery on the planet is also one of the hardest discoveries to share.

Because the information in this book almost always transforms the person who reads it, one would think that it would be difficult not to tell everyone of the discovery. However, it takes courage to answer the question: "Who wrote this book?" The answer, as you've seen above, doesn't fit into conventional lines of thinking.

At the risk of sounding beside myself, I have to tell the story. We are living in a friendly universe teeming with mortals and celestial beings. We have an incredible future ahead of us in this vast universe. Our lives have just begun.

Imagine the implications of changing a global perspective into a cosmic consciousness. What a difference it would make if everyone knew why we are here. Everyone would be happier if we were all conscious of a loving, divine being who shares our experience of personal spiritual growth and is helping us along through this adventure in a breathtakingly beautiful cosmos.
